Arbëria: Origin, Historical Significance, and Albanian Linguistic and Cultural Identity

The term #Arbëria has deep roots in Albanian history and culture, long before the name Shqipëri became the country’s official name. Historically, “Arbër” and “Arbëresh” were the names Albanians used to refer to themselves, their language (Arbënisht), and their homeland.

As early as the 16th century, figures such as Gjon Buzuku used “Arbënesh” to describe themselves. In the following centuries, the term maintained a central role: from the Kuvendi i Arbërit (1703) to the Albanian National Risorgimento of the late 19th century, when “Albanian of Italy” intellectuals such as Girolamo De Rada and Vincenzo Dorsa strengthened its symbolic value. During the 20th century, poets and scholars such as Giuseppe Schirò and Eqrem Çabej confirmed that Arbëria remained a living concept, capable of uniting Albanians within and beyond territorial borders. Even today, the Arbëreshë communities of Italy continue to call themselves this, maintaining a strong bond with their “heartfelt homeland.”

Arbëria, therefore, does not represent a specific geographical area, but a shared cultural heritage, a symbol of identity spanning centuries of history. It is the spiritual homeland of Albanians in their lands of origin and in the diaspora from the Arbëreshë in Italy to the Arvaniti in Greece and a brand like Made in Arbëria draws precisely on this shared heritage.
